Driving with a rental car in Denmark
Driving with a rental car in Denmark during all seasons is effortless. The road system is modern, well-maintained and convenient.
This destination also serves as an excellent departure point for traveling to Germany or Sweden (via the bridge connecting them).
Danish drivers are calm and patient, and you should adjust your driving style to them to enjoy easy and safe trips on the beautiful roads.
◾ Cyclists
Denmark is one of the most active countries when it comes to cycling.
In the city and beyond, you will see cyclists everywhere. This means bike paths are located next to almost every road, and even if there is no organized path, you must drive with your rented car with attention to the many riders.
◾ Toll roads
There is no need to pay a toll on most of the main roads in the country.
The main roads where you will be required to pay a toll are the Oresund Bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden and the Storebelt Bridge connecting several islands.
◾ Sirens
Danish drivers are not used to car horns. Especially inside the city, you should avoid using the car horn except in emergencies.
◾ Going out of the country with a rented car
You can rent a car in Denmark and visit neighboring countries. Be sure to mark the countries you wish to visit already during the booking stage (or indicate them to our representative if you order via phone), as you will receive written confirmation from the car rental supplier and will be insured and covered with road service if needed.
Please note that in some European countries, such as Switzerland and Austria, a special sticker is required for driving on motorways, which can be purchased at kiosks at the border crossings. The responsibility for purchasing a sticker and using it correctly rests solely with the renter of the vehicle and not the car rental company, therefore it is necessary to stick it following the instructions of the local authority. Be sure to find out about the need to purchase a sticker every time you leave one country and enter another.
◾ Travelling with the rental car on a ferry
In Denmark, you can travel on a ferry - for a trip to the islands and even to cross to Sweden - with your rented car.
If you intend to board a ferry, you must inform us or the rental car company in advance, because some of the rental car companies may charge additional insurance fees.
Tips for driving in the winter in Denmark
Planning to rent a car in Denmark in winter? We have gathered several important tips for driving a rental car in Denmark during the winter months.
Please note that the vehicles offered by the rental car companies in Denmark are not equipped with winter tires.
Since the neighboring countries (for example Germany, Switzerland, Austria, etc.) apply an obligation to drive with winter tires only, it will not be possible to rent a car in Denmark and visit these countries with the rented car between the dates of November 1 and April 15 of the following year.
Please note that the use of snow chains is only allowed on icy or snow-covered roads.
Antifreeze additive At very low temperatures the fuel in the tank may freeze.
Therefore, we recommend parking the vehicle in a covered parking lot and/or adding antifreeze liquid to the fuel tank when refueling (a special substance that prevents freezing), which can be purchased, if necessary, at gas stations.
