Driving Recommendations in Las Vegas
Although Las Vegas is a popular leisure destination for many Americans, especially on weekends, driving a rental car in Las Vegas is hassle free. The streets are designed in a grid pattern, which makes navigation very easy.
The hotels along the Strip are almost adjacent to each other, turning your trip into an exciting experience of lights and architectural grandeur. All hotels offer parking for their guests, either for free or at an additional cost.
◾ Long Drives
Keep in mind that the summer in the Las Vegas area is very hot, so be sure to have water and snacks for your trips. On many of the highways between towns or service stations, the distances are large, and transportation options are limited. Particularly noteworthy is Highway 50, known as "America's Loneliest Road." Even if you rented a 4x4 off-road vehicle, it is not allowed to drive it off the main roads. Our rental car company's roadside assistance service is available 24/7, whether you are in a major city or out in nature.
◾ Recommended Highways
Interstate 15 is a recommended choice for those who want to stay in the vicinity of civilization. It is the highway that leads to Las Vegas from the Mojave Desert in the west and continues towards Utah and the national parks, Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon.
Many choose to rent a car in San Francisco and return it in Las Vegas, passing through these scenic points along the way. Those who want to continue north with their car towards Zion can use US-95, and those heading south to Arizona can take US-93, along the border with Utah. To go south to Arizona, US-93 will also do the job, followed by Interstate 40, a transcontinental highway.
◾ Additional Driver
Insurance for an additional driver in Las Vegas can be relatively expensive, so it is recommended to pre-book the Gold Plan, which includes insurance for three additional drivers over the age of 25. The Gold Plan is especially cost-effective because it includes the cost of one fuel tank, allowing you to return the car with an empty tank.
◾ Tolls Rodes
In the USA there are many toll roads. In order to save unnecessary dealing with small change during your trip, the car rental stations offer renting a Tollpass device (similar to the Route 6 device) with which you can pass on these roads and receive the charge in a centralized manner from the rental company and pay via CC.
Please note that some toll roads are exempt by the TollPass device, for example in Montreal, Kansas and South Carolina. It is your responsibility to verify this before traveling on toll roads. Driving on a toll road without payment is subject to fines.
For more information about the included and excluded roads, visit the following website: https://www.tollpassgo.com/
◾ Special Lanes
In fast highways in the USA, there are often lanes marked with the abbreviation HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle lanes), which are lanes for vehicles with multiple passengers during specific times of the day. It is forbidden for a vehicle to use these lanes unless it has the specified number of passengers indicated on the sign.
◾ Turns at Traffic Lights
In some US states, there are different rules regarding right and left turns at traffic lights compared to Israel. Right turns are allowed at some red lights in certain states. However, it is still obligatory to yield to pedestrians and crossing vehicles. If you are unsure about the rules in the state you are traveling in, you can wait for a green light. Left turns can have their own set of rules, even if the light is green. The right-of-way may be given first to oncoming traffic.
